Artist’s Statement

In college I had a photographer roommate who loved smokestacks. She said she loved the beauty of their simplistic design. (Freud would have had a heyday with her). But as I evolve, I too find elegance in the everyday. I remember picking through my dad's little plastic drawers of nuts, bolts and washers and marveling at their metallic glow, their weight, their simple geometric shapes. I couldn't believe there could possibly be such a thing as "stainless" steel - something that would never rust, tarnish or fade (maybe it was my Catholic upbringing?). Into my late thirties I pondered the designs in nature as designs for life. And instead of finding lines, I found circles and became fascinated by the simple truth of a circle: something with no beginning, and no end.

So it seems natural that I would find beauty, elegance and design at its most profound in hardware items; nuts and bolts and wing nuts and washers and ball chain and things of that ilk. And so I created Hardwear- wearable jewelry art made from hardware store finds. Wearing it might not answer any existential questions, but in the very least, it will start a conversation!

Price Range $10 - $48
